Many people ask how to wash goose feather products. If you have this doubt, read this article before putting their products in a washing machine.

The goose Feather (also called duvet) is still one of the best products for cold insulation, so it’s quite popular the use of sleeping bags and also goose feather jackets in the mountains. The reason this happens is that the plume does a very efficient air insulation and the air is the best thermal insulator there is.

The problem of the feather is moisture. If this wet material becomes a kind of Pope and loses completely your heating function, because the feathers cease to generate an air mattress. Moreover, if not dried properly, so that the wet feathers loose during the drying process, the material is damaged permanently, there’s the problem of getting this stuff.

Formerly in laundries Brazil had no equipment to wash feathers correctly, that has changed, but if you choose laundry washing ask before if they know how to wash correctly, because as you will see below wash a feather can be a bit complex.

See below How to wash clothes or a sleeping bag of goose feather:

1-the washing machine needs to be by the method of listing, who are with the front entrance (machines with horizontal axis). Unfortunately not many people have that kind of washing machine in Brazil, and the vast majority have the vertical axis models (which can ruin products with duvet). You should wash one garment at a time, and for sleeping bag ideally using a commercial machine with greater capacity.

2-you must adjust the machine to warm water (do not use hot water or cold water), with neutral detergent without fragrance (maybe that term does not exist in Portuguese, but sounds a little culinary flavoring) and without dye. In North America there is a product called himself Down Wash Plus the Ganger. Do not use liquid detergent, fabric softener, bleach, and least odorant.

3-Then repeat the wash rinse twice, to make sure you didn’t get any SOAP residue.

4-to dry you should use a commercial dryer front entrance (horizontal rotation axis) set to low heat (low heat). You should put the machine together with the piece of clothing or sleeping bag some clean tennis balls (for massaging the duvet in the drying process and help loosen the feathers). It is very important that you dry your duvet to regain the insulation feature. When the duvet styling it is recommended that you remove the product from the dryer occasionally shaking to help loosen the feathers. This process is very important because if the duvet dry on soggy form will lose scalability and will never function as insulation. A jacket can take 2 to 3 hours to dry, and a sleeping bag up to 6 hours (these times are references, but eventually may take longer).

That said it is clear that it is quite difficult to get a structure suitable for wash duvet products in Brazil, and if you can you have to take the day for it and have the patience to follow the entire process, especially during the drying to shake the product and help in releasing the plumes.

In general domestic machines are too small to wash duvet linen (not to mention sleeping bag), and models with vertical axis can ruin the same.

Never wash the duvet products dry.

See below the tips that the climber Luis Makoto Ishibe, distributor of Black Diamond brands and Marmot in Brazil. The procedure described here is not a recommendation of any manufacturer nor noZica (Ishibe company), distributor of Marmot products in Brazil. If someone is following the procedure described here should make its own risk:

I’ve washed my duvet products at home, both jackets as sleeping bag. For that I always pick a hot and sunny day (monitored by meteorology) and start washing very early.

I use a good drum volume, usually positioned on the outside of the bathroom, pulling the shower hose out through the window to get warm water.

1-Dissolve a handful of neutral detergent in the drum with lukewarm water and dip the product of duvet, poking and turning with a wood splinter-free, like a broom handle. Perform this operation for about 15 minutes.

2-after this time I rub with soft brush sites that were dirty.

3-repeat the operation 1 for over 10 or 15 minutes.

4-drum product Retreat and let drip hanging, while fill the drum with clean warm water.

5-do I the rinse the drum using once more the broomstick to agitate the water and make sure that the SOAP is being removed.

6-Repeat the operation 4 and 5.

7-Hang and play a little more warm water to drain.

8-at this time the duvet is so soggy that it is almost hopeless. The impression is that you screwed up the product definitely. Note that this appearance is common even in the process using the washing machine.

9-So I use a normal washing machine just for centrifuge and remove excess water. If product with Dry Loft (Gore Tex) or other technologies of sealing (including MemBrain) avoid the spin cycle.

10-Here starts the drying process. Choose a well ventilated spot in the shade to hang the product.

11-I’m stirring the product from time to time. If you have help secure the edges to stretch the product and shake as if making dust of a blanket. I’m looking for change position so that the feather soaked don’t stay in the same position.

12-after a few hours repeating the process you will notice that the feathers began to drop. Repeat the operation “shakes dust” several times.

13-When the plume is already regaining the volume we have more sun, put it upside down and let get some Sun.

14-Normally you can’t dry a duvet “au naturel” in a single day. It is important to collect during the night, and let it sit without suffering any kind of compression. Do not store in carry bag or indoors or tight.

15-I’m still drying the next day to make sure it’s completely dry.

As I wrote earlier in this procedure is not recommended by manufacturers of products of duvet. But here in Brazil we have difficulty in finding a location providing laundry service for these products and the practice showed me that, at least in the time I took a chance, this method works.

If someone is trying to better be warned: it’s a lot of work. But if your duvet is dirty in an unbearable level might be the solution.
