It was established in 1974 as an autonomous body by the Government of Rajasthan with the objective of imparting quality education in the field of agriculture and related sciences. The university is spread over an area of about 400 acres, located near Udaipur city, and comprising five constituent colleges: College of Agriculture, College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, College of Home Science, College of Basic Sciences & Humanities and College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology.

The courses are designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding about different aspects related to agricultural science such as crop production, animal husbandry, soil science, forestry, horticulture etc. The university also offers specialized courses in dairy technology, food processing technology and agribusiness management.

The main objectives behind establishing this university are to promote research and development activities in the field of agriculture; encourage innovation; provide quality education; strengthen rural economy; develop human resources for agricultural development; upgrade technical skills; improve farm productivity; create awareness among farmers about new technologies and practices; promote sustainable usage of natural resources and develop agro-based industries.

The university has well-equipped laboratories for conducting research activities in various disciplines such as plant pathology, entomology, nematology etc., which are supported by modern instruments like scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), gas chromatographs (GC) etc. It has also established a Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) which undertakes advanced research projects on topics like biotechnology applications for crop improvement etc., funded by various national bodies such as Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR).

The university also provides several extension services including training programmes for farmers on modern farming techniques such as integrated pest management (IPM), water conservation measures etc., regular visits to nearby villages by faculty members to educate farmers about new technologies available for increasing farm productivity etc., organizing seminars/workshops on current topics related to agriculture etc., providing advisory services through Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) located at district level throughout the state etc.
