After our partner fluo and Led Led bulbs, I propose today to discover the led strips. These ribbons are becoming increasingly fashionable to create very nice bright moods. Today I’ll introduce this product available at our partner, but introduce you to its use in a practical case, which will use it as an outdoor, alarm light for alarm, and festive decoration system, all controlled by our automation box…
To begin with, a small presentation of the Ribbon in him even. We have a 5 m (16 colors) RGB Led Ribbon, 72w power:
This Ribbon is delivered rolled up in this way:
Each end has 4-wire color for the connection to the controller.
For this model, we have 60 leds per meter, which makes this tape really very bright. Close-up on the Ribbon:
As seen here, it can be recut every 5cm, where the copper connection tabs. The Ribbon is fully encompassed in silicone, which makes it waterproof, and can be used outdoors if you want. On the back is of the double face to fix it where you want.
Alone, this tape will not work. Indeed, it must add a diet such as this:
It is a ‘big’ model of 150w, because we will connect two ribbons of 5 m subsequently, either 144w: p this 150w power supply, otherwise, would be also capable of powering 4 ribbons of 36w (as you see outflows, white, are planned).
Finally, it takes a RGB controller to be able to control the Ribbon: change colors, lights, etc… The model used here is controlled via an IR remote, which will be easier to integrate into our system automation 😉 But there are also radio models.
There is more than to assemble everything.
The connection between the power supply, the controller, and the headband is not really worries, just follow the colors of the wires. Little before Assembly layout situation, just to check that everything works correctly:
Supply is connected to an electrical outlet, the controller to a 12v power output (the others are placed on a domino story of not let them walk alone…), then the Ribbon attached to the controller according to the colors.
The more delicate is the junction of bands together. The idea is to fix the tape in slot roof in front of the House. This one doing a dozen meters long, so let’s put two ribbons of 5 m in series.
This will require that strip the two ribbons at one end, by removing the silicone with a small cutter. It must be scratching the legs to make contact properly:
Then used a small quick connector in which we clipped the end of each Ribbon:
It can happen that there is a bad contact: there may be repolished a little paws, or ensure the right contact in the quick connector. It happened to me having blue who doesn’t turn, or then the green… The contact is quite sensitive, so proceed with delicacy.
Once you ensure that everything works, there are more than to proceed with the installation.
I did this one on the inner edge of the slot roof, which makes the invisible Ribbon on the front of the House. You can see the tape here on the right (bottom view of the Sub roof)
Initially, I had used the double-sided integrated to the Ribbon. It unfortunately took off after a few days, but I figured a little: pasted on wood, outside, with moisture… should hope not too. I finally fixed it by using a few riders, but the plant remains just as invisible. He should just do not nail in the Ribbon…
Food and the RGB controller have been positioned in the attic, up just two tiles in the bottom of the roof. Of course, this way it becomes impossible to control the IR controller, since it is out of reach: I for that used a remote transmitter at e., mini Powermind
The advantage is to issue orders IR to the headband RGB controller is powered by sector, so no action to change the batteries…
All this is so positioned under the tiles:
For steering, it’s my eedomus box that will take care. For this, I use the transmitter IR Kira128, that I had submitted some time ago. As a reminder, this IR Transmitter plugs into the network and is able to learn IR commands 128. Then, a simple call from HTTP address to send the desired IR order. So I started by learning the different keys of the remote control of the RGB controller to the Kira.
Then a HTTP actuator has been created on the eedomus, on which I have briefed the URLs of different orders of the RGB controller:
A few macros have been made on this actuator. To directly turn on the Red headband, for example, it sends a command ‘On’ then a command ‘red’ to 5s interval to give time to the IR transmitter to respond:
There is to make the rules we want. For example when I activate the alarm, I want that the band turns red 30 s
Conversely, turns 30 s in green when I get home and I turn off the alarm from the outside. The front of the House is lit in red or green to confirm his condition, hard to miss 😀
Another rule on the headband in white when a presence is detected on the outside, the Ribbon is used to illuminate the garden so we can go home.
Other rules are used for the holidays: Halloween, the Ribbon automatically lights up in the dark orange. At Christmas, he lights up white flashing (can also take it to all colors one after the other, more or less quickly).
Once this is in place, one of the connected output of my Kira IR emitters is placed in front of the other mini PowerMind, in the House: in this way, the Kira (connected to an amplifier IR to be able to use several transmitters) can drive both my installation of Audio Video in the living room, but also my banner outside.
A small demo video of what gives lighting outdoors:
The final installation is very nice: it is original, rather pretty, and that can be used for various needs, as here the alarm, outdoor lighting, or even Christmas decorations. Discreet, the rest Ribbon in place permanently, over the dismantling of Christmas decorations each year: p
Well, of course this still has a cost:
2 ribbons Led 72w €77
power 150w to €72
a RGB IR controller to €40
PowerMind mini €39
and a Kira128 if you do not, to €98
a total of about € 400 :/ Compare the price of outdoor lighting and holiday decorations… Note that it is also possible to use only 36w ribbons: the lighting will be lower, but sufficient I think for many uses. A facility may begin to €100 depending on the needs that we have (Ribbon 5 m + power + controller).
In any case the result is convincing!
It is an example of use, but no shortage of ideas: under a Cabinet or above a cornice to create a light atmosphere in a room, in a bar, in a stairwell, on an awning to illuminate the terrace, etc… The Ribbon is discreet enough to be placed a bit anywhere, it will simply provide the place for food and the controller. Either way, the effect is guaranteed;
