Dedication Overview

DEDICATION

The etymological origin of the term in question is found in Latin. Specifically, it derives from “dedicatio”, which can be translated as “offering a work to a person” and which is the result of the sum of three different parts:

-The prefix “de-”, which means “from top to bottom”.

-The verb “dicare”, which is synonymous with “consecrate”.

-The suffix “-cion”, which is equivalent to “action and effect”.

In the workplace, the term dedication is associated with the time spent on an activity.

What is dedication

Dedication is the act and the result of dedicating : to employ; direct something to someone; be assigned; or consecrate a site to a cult. For example: “The dedication of this woman to her children is admirable”, “We need a salesperson with exclusive dedication”, “In the eastern region of the country the dedication of Christian temples continues to grow”.

The idea of dedication is usually used with respect to the time and effort that a person devotes to an activity. The concept, in fact, can be used as a synonym for intensity: “I worked with dedication on this project”, “The owner of the company appreciated the dedication of the manager”, “The boys were preparing the play with care and dedication: I hope that everything goes well in the function “.

The concept in the workplace

In the workplace, we speak of full dedication, exclusive dedication or full time dedication when a person occupies all of their available time in the same job. If a man works nine hours a day in a company and does not carry out any other external work activity, it can be said that he has a full dedication to that company. On the other hand, someone who works four hours in one company and four hours in another firm, fulfills a task with part-time dedication in both.

The advantages of exclusive dedication for the company with respect to a worker is that he will be completely integrated into the company, that he will make the maximum effort in his tasks and that he will not be able to leave the competition and will not even be able to give information to the competition. For the employee, it can bring with it the benefit of feeling valued and being focused on a company, although it can also mean losing other opportunities and projects.

The dedication of a temple or altar supposes its consecration to a certain divinity or figure.

The idea of dedication in religion

For religion, finally, dedication is a ceremony that is carried out to consecrate an altar or a temple to a divinity. Also called dedication is the inscription that records when a temple was erected and the celebration that remembers when it was dedicated.

Regarding this religious celebration, we can highlight other peculiarities such as the following:

-The Hebrews called it “Hanuchah”, which can also be translated as “renewal”.

-Within the scope of the Roman Church we can establish that this type of ceremony began to take place during the reign of Constantine. Numerous bishops met in it and lasted several days during which both speeches and the celebration of different Mysteries were carried out.

-It is interesting to know that, for their part, the Protestants do not carry out any type of dedication, since they decided to suppress them.
