Viva Galera Fotodgniana!!!All up???
Today I decided to put this sequence of photos for several reasons: it is a night photo , fashionable and illuminated with speedlites … 3 subjects that arouse much interest in a single tutorial.
I want to show a good example of how we can easily use portable flashes that are much better on the outside compared to the expensive generators that cost the price of a car.
There are some photographers who use portable battery with 2 or 3 socket capacities to connect the studio flash heads but this also greases any movement that the model will do.
This work was made for one of the biggest names in men’s fashion in Portugal, Nuno Gama, and it was a good opportunity to do something different since it was out of “normal” studio or outdoor situations, less stopped, less posed and A certain adrenaline because of the technical difficulty involved in the scene that was nocturnal (the police passed twice and I thought we would spend the night explaining why there was a guy taking his clothes off in the Boavista Avenue which is a main road in the Porto/Portugal traffic).

KEY LIGHT (OR MAIN LIGHT THAT WILL CALL LIGHT 1 )
FILL LIGHT (OR LIGHT ENVIRONMENT THAT WILL CALL LIGHT 2 )
SEPARATION LIGHT (OR LIGHT OF CUTTING THAT I WILL CALL LIGHT 3 )
KICKER LIGHT (OR SPECIAL LIGHTS = SPECIAL REFLECTIONS THAT I WILL CALL LIGHT 4 )
Just as a symphony is made with 7 notes, a good photograph should always have this tuning between the lights (ratios = differences between EVs) to be able to work well and, mainly, in Fashion there is “THE PHOTOGRAPHER” and yes “THE TEAM “That must have the credits in the disclosure … ALWAYS!!!!!
LIGHTS 1 AND 2:Always tuned with the same RATIO (= power) and with the same color temperature that, in this case, was corrected with a GEL technique (orange gel) CTO 1/4 in LIGHT 1 so that there was no Strange aspect that we see often by the color temperature of the portable flash more for the daylight fighting with the more yellow tones of the environment (3000> 4000 K).
THE LIGHT 1 (KEY LIGHT OR MAIN) positioned behind me (above my shoulders and pointed toward the model) on an extensible stick that I built from those used for wall painting (really !!!) and that I’ve fitted a tripod dock to place the portable flash mount with a trigger.
LIGHTS 3 (CUTOUT LIGHTS):These glimpses run along the sides of the body of the model and trim the surroundings of the avenue from the feet to the hair. There are two portable flashes on each side of the model, remembering that the two were twice the power of the LIGHT 1, otherwise they would only light up and would not perform the trim function.
IMPORTANT: The ratio between LIGHT 1 AND LIGHT 3 MUST BE +2 MINIMUM FOR LIGHT 3 CAN BE SEEN AS HIGHLIGHT.
HERE IS NO CORRECTION AT THE COLOR TEMPERATURE EXACTLY TO ENJOY THE DAYLIGHT’S OWN TONE (UNTIL LIGHT 1 HOW I EXPLAINED AI UP IN LIGHTS 1 AND 2)
LIGHT 4 (OR KICK LIGHT):They are lights that “happen” without control and are result of other existent sources around like these that are part of the urban illumination. They are very useful for creating depth in the photographic scene by adding light that reinforces the details of the background.
The most important thing is that it shows the fantastic potential and professional quality YOU can achieve without having to spend a lot of money attending very well to the technical expectations that the “big guys” show around.And more … with the possibility of making photos with a lot of movement because the portable flashes are autonomous sources that allow low ISO, independent, much cheaper and weigh nothing.
And to finish, I chose a setup with ISO 400 so that I can include more of the FILL LIGHT of the location that is very relevant in the final result (4 X ISO 100).
